In this course, students will be equipped with essential computer and critical thinking skills for successful postsecondary studies in the digital age. Students will learn to navigate technology basics, such as using standard software and managing files effectively, while learning strategies to manage computer-related stress. Students will explore educational applications to enhance their ability to learn new information. As the course progresses, students will examine methods to balance their digital lives, improve time management, and explore the safe and ethical use of technology and AI. By the course’s conclusion, students will possess the confidence and skills to navigate the ever-changing digital world adeptly.

Positive Psychology

Positive Psychology (HBK4T) – (1 credit, congregated class)
Passing grade: 50%
In this course, students will examine what makes our lives meaningful, pleasant, productive and healthy. The course will focus on positive psychological research and include discussions about resilience, positive emotions, mindsets, self acceptance, mindfulness, relationships, finding meaning and goal achievement. There will be opportunities to learn strategies to understand and develop personal strengths, improve personal relationships and deal with everyday adversity.

Early Childhood Education

Early Childhood Education (TOQ4T) – (1 credit, congregated class)
Passing grade: 60%
In this course, students will examine the principles of creating indoor and outdoor learning environments.  Students will examine the historical perspective of play and stages of play in detail.  Students will demonstrate an understanding of how to foster children’s joy of learning through child-centered and play-based pedagogy.  Students will use child development coupled with children’s emergent interests as a framework for planning and implementing a developmentally appropriate curriculum.

Personal Finance

Personal Finance (MBA4T) – (1 credit, congregated class)
Passing grade: 50%
In this course, students will develop an understanding of financial self-management using budget and SMART goal setting strategies. Course material will give students fundamental knowledge on a variety of topics to assist with current and future financial decision making. Topics covered include financial planning, tax concepts, goal setting and budget strategies, banks and banking, saving and investing, credit cards, loans, mortgages, credit history, estate planning, health and life insurance and current fraud schemes. This course strives to teach students how to live within their means today and build a secure financial future.

Community Corrections

Community Corrections (HCB4T) – (1 credit, top-up class)
Passing grade: 50%
In this course, students will examine community-based programs for both adult and young persons from alternatives to incarceration to conditional release and the impact of public attitudes on support for such programs. Emphasis is also given to victims, restorative justice and the process of reintegration for special offender populations. Students will also have an opportunity to assess career alternatives through discussions with guest speakers from the community corrections system.

Digital Photography

Digital Photography (AFI4T) – (1 credit, congregated class)
Passing grade: 50%
In this course, students will discover the rudiments of digital photography through not only technical examination, but also artistic and historical discussion. These relevant applications of photography will, in turn, facilitate discussion that covers basic pre and post-production workflow, the components of a camera, and the successful and proper use of the camera itself.

Applied Technology I

Applied Technology I (TAP4T) – (1 credit, congregated class) 
Passing grade: 60% 
In this course, students will have the opportunity to develop technical skills that will serve as a strong basis for successful entry into today’s trades and technology environments. This introductory course will combine theoretical and hands-on training, with an emphasis on workplace safety. Students will be trained on the proper usage of various hand and power tools through woodworking and other projects, while studying topic areas that include an introduction to mechanical systems such as gears, levers and pulleys, combustion engines and platform framing.

Electrical for Trades and Tech

Electrical for Trades and Tech – (TNC4T) – (1 credit, congregated class)
Passing grade: 60% 
In this course, students will explore the basics of electricity to develop an understanding and respect for the hazards when working with electrified devices. Students will study Ohm’s Law as it applies to voltage, current and resistance, and will construct both series and parallel circuits containing a variety of electrical components. Students will become comfortable with the usage of multimeters to test circuits and will become proficient in reading and creating circuit diagrams.

Millwright Machining – (TZP4T) – (1 credit, congregated class)

In this course, students will learn the principles of metal cutting and the relationship between speeds and feeds during various machining operations including benchwork, drill press operations, band saws, engine lathes, and pedestal grinders. They will also become familiar with the care and use of various precision measuring instruments when measuring, setting up, and manufacturing projects to specifications and prescribed tolerance

In this course, students will examine Indigenous peoples’ health and well-being (Mino-Bimaadiziwin) from creation to today and into the future. Students will learn about Indigenous culture, spirituality and traditional ways of healing and wellness. Students will gain an understanding of determinants of Indigenous Peoples’ health and cultural safety when working with Indigenous clients, communities and/or service providers.

Cross-Cultural Understanding

In this course, students will gain an understanding of the nature and interrelationship of culture and cultural diversity. Cross-cultural understanding means learning to value other cultures and respect their views. This understanding comes when people move from thinking that “different” means “wrong” to think that there might be another way to be tolerant and accepting. Through the exploration of their culture and examining external cultural forces, students will better comprehend the dynamic nature and diversity of culture and the world. Communicating with people of different cultures is a challenge in any cross-cultural interaction; practice and exploration will help improve cultural competence. People from other cultures come with their own ways of thinking, acting, and interpreting the world based on their unique cultural perspectives. Social relationships are enhanced when one adapts and responds to others using the appropriate skills. By sharing ideas, experiences, views, and perceptions, students will gain an appreciation of the way other cultures work and determine the themes common to all cultures.

Psychology of Evil

Psychology of Evil (HBF4T) – (1 credit, congregated class)

In this course, students will systematically examine how society defines evil and the many different pathways to evil. Students will critically examine the study of evil from psychological, social and biological perspectives. This course will address compelling questions that examine and explain the motives, rationales and environmental influences that cause people to abuse power and to act in destructive and horrific ways. Topics discussed in this course will include cults, terrorism, genocide, psychopaths, and corporate evil, to name only a few. Through analysis of case studies and historical events, students will reflect on how society and individuals can play an active role in reducing hostility and building more compassionate communities.

In this course, students will discover business in Canada and will focus on the areas and practices of the basics of business management. Through a combination of lecture and application-based exercises, students will study the relationships between the business areas of finance, human resources, marketing and operations, discuss legal issues, business ethics and social responsibility, and apply management concepts and practices all while running their own virtual business in a simulated environment.

In this course, students will develop strategies to think critically, engage in meaningful self-evaluation, develop sustainable relationship building and leadership skills when entering the workforce. In this course, students will demonstrate the importance of soft skills required in a dynamic, fast-evolving marketplace. In this course, students will acquire a basic understanding, and be able to describe primary operating functions, processes, and equipment utilized in Canadian surface and underground mining operations. Students will examine a number of common core extraction and mine development techniques and will demonstrate that they understand basic mining industry concepts and terminology. Students will be able to solve simple grade control problems, productivity rates, and three dimensional problems.

In this course, students will acquire theoretical and practical knowledge to supplement the skills required in a shop atmosphere, identify potential workplace hazards and determine the necessary personal protection against common shop and construction hazards. They will be introduced to the safe use and common operation, terminology and maintenance of fabrication equipment for forming plate and structural steel. The students will be able to explain material handling components and techniques and inspection methods. Finally, they will be introduced to the Workplace Hazardous Materials Information Safety (WHMIS) and the Occupational Health and Safety Act (OHSA).
